An older woman in her living room on a video call with a home specialist on a tablet

Not every home that needs a thoughtful look is around the corner.

Sometimes the house is in another state, and the family helping is spread across three more. Sometimes the person living there would simply rather start with something low-key before anyone comes through the door. And sometimes the question is small but nagging: is this bathroom going to work for the next ten years, or not?

A remote home review is designed for those situations. It brings a Certified Aging-in-Place Specialist into the home by video, so you can get experienced eyes on the spaces that matter without waiting for a visit.

How it works

The review happens on an ordinary video call, on a phone or tablet. The person living in the home, or whoever is with them, walks through the house with the camera while Meredith guides the tour. Family members can join from wherever they are, which is often the first time everyone has looked at the same rooms at the same moment.

The walk-through follows daily life rather than a room-by-room inventory. How do you get from the car to the front door? Where do you sit to put on shoes? What’s the path to the bathroom at night? How do you get in and out of the shower? Along the way, Meredith may ask you to show a doorway’s width, the height of the bed, the edge of a step, or where the light switches are. Those small details are what shape good recommendations.

What a trained eye catches

Most people know their homes very well, and that’s exactly why certain things become invisible. The rug that’s always been there. The step down into the family room. The shower door that opens the “wrong” way but has for thirty years.

A CAPS specialist looks at a home with a different question in mind: not “what’s wrong with this house?” but “how will this house support the way you live, now and later?” That includes the obvious spots, like the bathroom and stairs, and the less obvious ones, like the height of a favorite chair, the glare from a window, where you set down groceries, and whether there’s a sturdy place to hold at each point where you tend to reach.

Just as important, a specialist knows what not to change. Not every home needs a remodel, and good planning often means finding the few adjustments that make the biggest difference.

What you walk away with

After the review, you receive a prioritized plan. It lays out what to address first, what can wait, and what kind of help each item may call for, whether that’s something simple you can handle, a product to consider, or work for a contractor or occupational therapist.

That plan becomes a shared reference. It helps families talk about changes without every conversation starting from scratch, and it gives a local contractor a clear starting point rather than a vague request. For many people, it also brings a sense of relief: the worry turns into a list, and the list turns into steps.

Who it’s especially helpful for

A remote review is a natural fit when family members live in different cities and want to be part of the conversation, or when the home is outside the Charlotte area. It also works well for people who aren’t ready for an in-person visit but want to start planning, for someone considering a remodel who wants a second opinion first, and for anyone who wants to understand their options before making decisions.

If you live in or around Charlotte, an in-home consultation is also available. Some people start with video and later decide an in-person visit makes sense, and others find the remote review gives them everything they need. You can compare both on the Services page.

The person in the home comes first

Whether the review is in person or by video, the goal is the same: helping the person who lives in the home keep doing what matters to them, safely and comfortably, in a space that still feels like theirs. Family input is valuable, but the plan should reflect how that person actually wants to live.
